Artist Statement:
I’m looking for the first language and the natural order of chaos.
For nearly two decades, I have had a fascination with the expression of meaning in written language and its relationship to the natural world. Written language can reflect nature in meaningful ways. Ancient languages often found their origins in the shapes and patterns of nature; we see this even in some modern languages such as Chinese and Arabic, where landscapes are reflected in the characters themselves.
My work furthers these efforts to expose nature’s secrets, especially as they relate to written language and patterns. My work deals with the relationships between the visuals of written language and landscape, and the constancy and permutations of pattern. Does landscape have a visual effect on written language? How do we interpret and define natures’ patterns? Do we find meaning or attach arbitrary judgments? If we continue to decimate our planet, will we lose important reference points for the expression of our existence? Can we find a richness of meaning when the only thing left to reference is ourselves? I’ve explored these questions and others through pencil and paper, oil paints, and now manipulated photographs. In my photography work I do this by mirroring the original photograph and noting the patterns and shapes that emerge, previously unseen and unexpected. I do this via an image editing program, sometimes applying effects such as color saturation or contrast to emphasize the pattern and/or calligraphy.  The patterns and designs that emerge as I manipulate the photographs reveal natures’ handwriting, poems written by the earth.

These photographs can be reproduced at varying sizes. Please call or write for sizes and price quotes.
