Each box begins its life in November. I walk over 300 acres searching for ironweed, goldenrod and other natural materials for my lightboxes. Although the harvesting is essential to the basic construction, these nature walks are also a pleasure and certainly inspire my work.
For instance, while looking at a stand of ironweed, each stalk blends with the others. When viewed singly, however, each stalk reveals its’ own individuality. I try to follow this example with the lightboxes. When viewed as a group, they appear similar because of size and shape. However, on their own, each box can be seen responding to it’s own set of circumstances.
